Ikoku Irokoi Romantan OVA Episode 01

I was debating for awhile whether this show was worth my time to blog. However, since no one else wants to blog these types of genres I figured why not despite all the cliché moments in the story. It is very linear and for some odd reason could not get out of that habitual form that most yaoi ( <— warning for those reading the summary) falls under. I’m not sure why many of them are very simple in the whole two men meet, have an affair, and that’s about the extent of their commitment. Either it ends at that point or a separation occurs until they can achieve their happy ending supposedly.

What’s sad is that no one seems to know how many episodes there are going to be (at least that I can find). So if this is the end then it was a poorly executed anime in general. For a start it can still redeem itself, in fact I think it can recover rather nicely into a simple OVA. For many craze yaoi fangirls I’m sure it’ll be fine, they’ll discover that there is a sex scene and squeal into the night while I felt that the plot was rushed and poorly handled. If there was some longevity to the story, maybe an extension I wouldn’t feel as such, but I believe that things were too neatly done.

I will give it one thing, the animation was very nicely drawn, though nothing I have yet to see before. It brought a bit more life and uniqueness to the anime, but it still took a lot from many other storylines seen in common-placed OVAs. Also, the characters had little time to develop their relationship and it also seemed like they lacked the biggest necessity for romance. Chemistry, that was my biggest problem is that the pair seemed so unnatural. After their sex scene, it did seem a bit more approachable as a concept, but it still remained far-fetched.

I would like to see a bit more exploration into the depth of their relationship, maybe a date or something. That would be a somewhat nicer then drinking and a one night stand. Though I will admit this series did have funny moments. Examples would be a male panty shot which almost made me fall out of my chair along with finding out our blonde Italian hero’s occupation. The humor I think is what kept it alive as a show instead of allowing it to sink into oblivion. I hope to see more out of the next episodes (considering if there are more, I’m not sure whether to hope or not). We’ll see, it could amount to something despite a sloppy first episode.

I should also note that I’m sorry to scare half my fanbase, not that I really have one, with yaoi. :]

  1. Well, it is a surprise someone blogged this one at all.

As someone who’s read the original manga the OVA is based on, I’d be a lot more critical. Anyway.

There will be a second part if one is to trust MoonPhase, but the date is TBA for now.

It was passable, but really, as a whole it is quite disappointing. I liked the manga far better.

  2. i believe that only 2 episodes of this story, which after watching the first one does not disappoint me. I’ve read the manga and it was so much better than this ova. don’t get me wrong the ova was cute but it could have been so much better. the art work was really disappointing; i didn’t think the characters resembled those done by Ayano Yamane - believe me, hers are much better. I hope that Junjou Romantica’s anime is better than this.
