Look! I Got Screwed Over~!

Everyone has bad periods in their life. It’s natural and much more a part of living then many of us realize. Supposedly, an individual proceeds to wallow a bit before taking that deep breath and deciding that things can only get better. I’m in the middle of such a period, solely due to the fact I have been robbed in many ways that really bring my self-esteem crumbling. I know it will indeed become a bit easier and that I should just look on the bright side for now; however, I am still in a slight disbelief as to what has occurred. Naturally, I’ll have to leave this blog to wait and this is why.
I woke up this morning at around 9:30 and hopped onto the computer much like I normally do. I got up early because I wanted to meet some friends online for Pangya due to the whacky time zones out there. Instead, waving morning to everyone in MAL’s sub-channel SOL brought someone asking me what is MethSong? I didn’t know the question was directed at me, I figured it was to someone else in the channel. Checking my inbox that morning I had a bill from BlueHost.com, seemingly I had registered a domain called MethSong.com in my sleep.
Kanashimi: ….
Kanashimi: Why do I have a bill in my inbox for a meth song?
Kanashimi: wtf is that?
Kanashimi: What’s meth song?
At first I figured it could be a mistake, but then I recalled someone asking about it so the above was what was posted in IRC. I was sent a link of me on MyAnimeList’s forum posting a video to a YouTube video called Meth Song, which was located in the site announcements for awhile. I flipped when the realization hit me that someone was watching my every move, that someone had gone to the extent of changing all my passwords as soon as they realized I was up. I asked one of the MAL staff to ban me for the time being, which to this point I still am. When I understood that someone had access to my checking account, credit cards, etc I really did start sobbing so hard. I didn’t know what to do, I was beside myself and oddly scared to surf the internet to any site I knew.
Much like I asked in IRC, I will ask it here: I just wanna know who would do this… Why steal from a sixteen year old? I felt so confused, almost as why me and why now? The time of it was terrible considering my mom wasn’t healing well after surgery in the hospital. How can you possibly steal $700 dollars from my checking account, a STUDENT checking account, and then $900 from my mother’s credit card. I didn’t have time to be livid, I only had time to grab a tissue box and weep for four hours to these different organizations I had to call to stop this in some way. I couldn’t help it, I’ll account it to immaturity for now, but it’s really fearful to be put in such a situation.
I have never gotten a virus, I have never been hacked, and I have always assumed I was relatively safe over the internet. My biggest concern, even up to this point, is how and where? I have no idea where this person discovered me, and how. I’m sure that would help me evaluate how such a thing occurred. It’s just daunting, and even now my spirit feels dampened by the fact I feel cheated.
On the positive side, the credit cards are canceling all the charges from my know-how. My mom should not be effected. For my own personal checking account I have another problem because I am a minor they seem to say they won’t pay me back. Obviously, I had to have my mom sign with me to get a checking account, as any minor would. The result of this, after explaining the situation, was literally to hear that I was the cause of the infraction so I am at fault. Also, $55 dollars that generous people donated to OTBK was taken as well. All I have to say is if you’re going to steal from someone, do it in person so I can physically beat your ass or even struggle for dear life till you shove a knife in my stomach. I would much prefer to be able to fight you instead of allowing you to hide behind a computer screen. I hope that bastard sees what I am typing since he still has access to my BlueHost account. I cannot change that account until tomorrow due to the fact that the Billing Department is closed on Sundays. So if anything odd shows up here then you know why.
Understandably, I am earnestly going away for awhile. I’ll be reformatting tonight and recovering from this attack on my computer soon. I’ll try to post here and there, but I feel so shitty I don’t know when I’ll get around to it. I honestly don’t know when to say you’ll get steady updates again, more so after what has transpired recently. I wonder though, when that man saw me typing I was sixteen years old, did he feel a shred of guilt? Did he care when he heard my mom was in the hospital, or maybe he’d be interesting in knowing we don’t have enough money to pay the rent now? I hope such images haunt him for the rest of his lousy life. I have no remorse saying that, wishing it, or hoping for it.
I’m sorry to everyone I ranted to and everyone who heard it, I’m sorry to MAL and their staff, and just for the trouble in general. Thank you for understanding my situation and all the support I got. Truly, I have to thank MAL because if the guy hadn’t gone there I wouldn’t have known. I would have been oblivious until the credit card companies started early. Sadly, it could have been worse.

Your entry has made me feel so sad. I agree, that bastard should stop hiding behind his screen and take this shit like a man.
Hope you can get back on MAL soon, I actually never noticed how much our forums needed you until today =(
And I wish you luck with your mom, the rent, and of course to you since you seem so terribly affected by this terrible event T_T

Understandably, your loss is very bad, and so every penny counts.
If there’s any consolation, I can offer an advice: I know that right now you’re not eligible for debit accounts, but I highly stressed the advantages of debit transactions: you deduct money from real monetary values, as apart from credit. I’m sure there are plenty of debit accounts in your area that are also able to do online shopping.
And, whatever you do, have two separate accounts: one for your daily means, the other for your online shopping.
I know it’s hard, so take your time to reorganize your situation first.

Just make sure that everything’s alright before you start with MAL or this again. We’ll hold down the fort for you. :3

I stayed up all night to do so only to find while checking my checking account over the internet that there was a transaction more recent then the others. It was for a small amount, but it was in progress. A result of calling my bank, gave me the IP number of the person who did this, their bank’s number, and their state location. He has been reported and will be in jail very soon.
Once again, I’m grateful to all of you and to the support I received in MAL’s IRC channel. Much love~ :]

Wow. What a horrible person, to steal from a sixteen year old… I was thinking about the same thing recently, since I just got a bank account… I’m happy that the person got caught, serves them right.

I’m sorry to hear this happened and I should let you kknow that with all it’s built in flaws, Windows itself is open to attacks like that which can steal you account info and credit card numbers. The best we can reallly do is to never store that info in a computer connected to the internet. If you already have, you should delete all your cookies, history, temp internet files, caches, form data and passwords. Most of this you can do from inside Internet Explorer via the Tools menu, Internet Options. Just hit the Delete button in the Browsing History section and use each option at least once. For the coookies, they’re usually stored in the folder,
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Cookies
(instead of Administrator user the name you entered when you installed Windows.) If this folder isn’t empty, delete everything in it. I know it’s a hassle to type in passwords and not have the autocomplete functions in the web browser, but it’s much more secure that way. After all, they can’t steal info that isn’t there to be taken. I also suggest spending the $7.50/month for a service like LifeLock which will reimburse you when fraud strikes like this up to $1,000,000. Oh, and if you doon’t already use it the free scan at
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
will also look for vulnerabilities in your OS and programs that these people commonly exploit to steal your data.

I’ve had something similar happen to me in the past, although not as bad as you. I’m just glad they were able to catch the guy that did it to you as they weren’t able to track them in my case. I hope the future finds better things for you.

[…] I found was a fairly long post about how she’d had her identity stolen. Honestly it was one of those posts where even a crusty curmudgeon like me finds myself […]

If it makes you feel any better, and I realize this post is old, I got raped online also for 2000 bucks…took me a few weeks of paperwork and talking to the bank to get it back, but it definitely wasn’t a pleasant experience when you’re bankroll gets cleaned out.
